Getting RRDB to Work

Tobias Oetiker
Timelord & SysMgr @ EE-Dept ETH-Zurich

As System Managers we look at a wide number of data sources. Some are counters like the Octet Counters of our router, others are Gauges like the temperature sensores in our Server Room. Whatever, they all silently produce data which we can either ignore or try to keep track of. RRDtool allows you to deal with this sort of data by logging it and makeing the logs available as friendly graphs. In this tutorial you will learn how to use RRDtool to create your very own custom Logging and Graphing tools.

During the tutorial you will be working an Unix Terminals writing your own little scrips and producing your own graphs. A real hands on tutorial.

Who should attend
People who want to write tools for monitoring Servers, Network Links, Stock Price ... Some working knowledge of Perl is required.

Tobi Oetiker has been working as a System Manager and Time Lord for the past 5 years. He (Get a life man!) spends way to much time writing Open Source Software. (MRTG, RRDtool, Sepp, LShort, ...)
