Free SSL certificates with your name: get your CAcert certificate
assured at SANE!
Similar as for PGP there is a web of trust built up for SSL and email
certificates. The certificates can be used from most of today's email programs.
You can also obtain server certificates from CAcert for free.
For a CAcert certificate you need to come to the SANE event well prepared:
- Prepare a personal account (login account) at CAcert.
Visit for this https://www.CAcert.org/get login account. You now
joined the ECCP program, have defined your account/password pair.
and have provided CAcert with your personal data (date of birth, nationality, ID number, etc.).
Tip: if your national ID shows your security number, use this social security number as CAcert ID number reference!
- Create your certificate and forward the public key part to
CAcert. See the CAcert web site for more instructions.
You have now created a private key (usually stored
within your browser profile), and published the corresponding public key
to CAcert.
- Print off an assurance document (to be obtained as follows: https://www.CAcert.org/get Assurance form) and complete that form. This form, also called the CAcert Identity Verification Form,
you need for allowing others to sign your application.
At the
conference we will have extra forms (without your details of course) available for
you for your convenience.
For every assurance you're going to make, you need a completed form.
- Before going to the SANE conference make sure you have
finished at least the first two steps and bring with you at least one
formal document: your identification ID(s). If you have more
as one formal ID the better you are, as you will collect more points in
one assurance session. At least one ID should contain a photo.
The CAcert certificate assurance policy works as follows:
- At the SANE conference visit the corner with the CAcert
poster and locate CAcert assurers to assure your certificate (yes; you
are really the person with this ID and this digital certificate).
The
CAcert Assurers will give you points. The amount depends on the "value"
of your ID(s) and the amount of "experience" the Assurer has obtained.
- If you collect 50 points your name will appear on your CA
certificate (you should be able to collect these points at SANE)
- If you collect more as 100 points you can act as Assurer
yourself (you should be able to collect these points at SANE as there
are a few Assurers at SANE who can give you 35 points at once).
At the
Free Software Bazaar, as well during the conference days we will make
sure that you can easily identify an Assurer.
