At Origin we manage Intranet services for our customers on a global scale. We operate these services on a 7x24 hours basis for global Intranets for tens of thousands of users. Those customers have very diverse and sometimes conflicting user requirements.

Market analysis showed no suitable solutions for our needs. Therefore we developed our own solution, called IntraConnect. This approach evolved from the operation and management of Origin's firewall services.

Management of Intranet services had to be split between local and remote (=central) service management in order to speed up customer's change requests by keeping local things local, and to guarantee service levels: local management should not have the possibility to change global settings that might endanger service levels.

Currently IntraConnect is being used for the following services: NTP, DNS, SMTP, POP, FTP, HTTP, NNTP, HTTP/NNTP caching proxies, FTP/TELNET proxies.

Hans Lambermont (30) studied Applied Physics at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE) from 1986 to 1994. He then joined Philips C&P and worked on worldwide Internet connectivity for Philips. This is where he became project leader of the DIBBS/IntraConnect project which targetted at improving his divisions Intranet services. Currently he works for Origin on In{ter, tra}net service development and architecture.
