The Network Operation Center of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) is responsible for the management of the moderately-sized but rather complex computer network of the University. The paper will present our experiences towards compiling an integrated environment for performing network management functions. Towards this goal, we explored a variety of promising technologies, along with implementations available either as commercial offerings or as public domain software. The technologies and tools that we investigated cover a wide range, from network monitoring tools such as HP OpenView with a variety of device-specific agents and Scotty with Tcl/Tk extensions, to databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL or MiniSQL.

The expected audience should have an interest in heterogeneous network management practices.

Alexios Zavras has been using and administrating Unix systems for the last fifteen years, and still remembers the time when ``network troubleshooting'' meant editing UUCP code. He is currently working in the Network Operation Center of the Athens University of Economics and Business in Greece. He has studied Computer Science in Greece and the United States, and worked for a number of private companies and academic institutions, almost exclusively on Unix machines.
